The cornea is the window in front of your eye, that allows light to enter. It is the transparent and curved outer layer of the eye, which protects the structures of the eye, acting as a barrier, protecting your eyes from various infections.

What is a corneal transplant?

When the eyelids are open the cornea is exposed to the environment. Thus, it is likely to get infected. Injuries, infections, diseases can cause changes in the cornea and affect your vision. The structures of the cornea can result in changes due to the aforementioned factors. The cornea or part of it must then be replaced, through a surgery called corneal transplant, otherwise known as keratoplasty. Types of Corneal Surgery in Cyprus

The type of corneal transplant necessary depends on the part of the cornea that needs to be replaced and/or the damaged areas.

Penetrating Keratoplasty

Full thickness corneal transplant

The doctor uses a small blade to remove the central part of the damaged cornea and replaces it with the healthy donor tissue.

Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty

Partial thickness corneal transplant

The surgeon removes the middle and outer layers of the cornea and replaces them with healthy corneal tissue.

Endothelial Keratoplasty

This procedure may help if the endothelium is damaged.

Two types of endothelial keratoplasty surgeries:

Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK)
Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK)

Each of the two procedures removes the damaged endothelial tissue and replaces it with healthy tissue. No stitches are needed. The difference between DSAEK and DMEK is the thickness of the donor cornea. Your doctor will decide which type of transplant is best for your eye condition.

Post-Op Procedure

After the cornea surgery in Cyprus, you may go home on the same day. The recovery time depends on the type of surgery that you will have. You should use eye drops and possibly other medications as instructed by your doctor.

The first days after your surgery, your eye is expected to be irritated and sensitive towards the light. Light pain might be experienced, however it is considered to be manageable through pain killers, as instructed by your doctor. You will need to wear an eye patch while performing specific tasks. Your doctor will discuss with you about certain activities that you may need to avoid.

You will need to have a follow up with your doctor within the first 24-48 hours.
