A cataract is a ‘cloud’ or ‘shadow’ in the lens of the eye that causes blurred vision. A cataract can also cause hazy vision, seeing spots, and brightness or sunlight sensitivity. With cataract things can appear out of focus and colours can look faded.

A cataract can appear due to several reasons. Aging, genetics, lifestyle and medications play a significant role in the appearance of cataract.

Cataract surgery in Cyprus is very effective as long as the patient comes to the ophthalmologist in time. If a patient has cataract in both eyes, we usually recommend having cataract surgery on each eye a few weeks apart, but it always depends on what the patient prefers.

The procedure

Then they will suction the pieces of cataract to clean the area. Once the eye is cataract free, they will put the artificial lens through the small hole. After the surgery, an eye patch will be placed on your treated eye to protect it from dust or anything that could potentially cause an infection. Your vision might be blurry for a day or more and your treated eye might be sensitive to light and brightness. Watery or itchy eyes, and double vision are normal on the days following cataract surgery.

Aftercare

After the cataract surgery you should use eye drops as instructed by your doctor. The eye drops will protect your eye from infections and make the healing process easier and faster.

Make sure water and soap do not meet your treated eye and do not rub your eyes. Avoid eye make-up and swimming for 4 weeks. You should avoid bending over and lifting heavy things. In general, you should avoid putting any pressure on your eyes for a few days.

Normally, your eye will be healed withing 4 to 6 weeks after cataract surgery and you will be able to continue with all your everyday activities. Make sure that your vision is fully back before you start driving again.
